Shillong, Sep 2: The Pastors’ Fellowship of the Church of God, Meghalaya and Assam has urged the state government to declare November 1 a state holiday to commemorate Rev. J.J.M. Nichols-Roy.
In a representation submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday, the fellowship said November 1 marks Nichols-Roy’s death anniversary and described him as a key figure in Meghalaya’s political and constitutional history and a prominent advocate of tribal rights.
A state holiday would allow people to remember his contributions to politics, constitutional governance, religion and socio-cultural development of indigenous communities, it said, recalling his advocacy for religious freedom and secular values, particularly the right to profess and practise religion under Article 25.
The fellowship, highlighting his journey from a village in Khasi Hills to becoming an influential voice on tribal administration, said his public life from 1884 to 1959 was marked by service, sacrifice and courage. It also cited his economic initiatives like the United Fruit Company Limited founded in 1918.
The demand has been linked to the 125th anniversary of the Church of God in Meghalaya and Assam to be observed in February 2027.
The representation was signed by president Rev. Dr P.K. Hoojon and general secretary Rev. Dr S.K. Syliemlieh.
