Shillong, Aug 31: The Hajong Students Youth Voice (HSYV) Federation Council has launched an online appeal calling for a fair, transparent and independent investigation, including a CBI inquiry, into the deaths of two young Hajong youths.
Semanto Hajong (21) and Pronome Hajong (22) were found dead under suspicious circumstances inside a roadside shop at Lumsohphoh, Nongthymmai on June 14, 2026. Authorities indicated a possible case of suicide by hanging, but this explanation has been disputed by the victims’ families and local groups.
The families are seeking truth, transparency, accountability and justice, the organisation said, adding therefore it has started an online petition to gather public support.
The organisation said concerns remain regarding circumstances of deaths, progress of investigation and need for updates to families. It stressed the petition does not prejudge outcome or accuse any individual.
It also raised concerns over possible breach of workplace safety SOPs and late-night working arrangements, and urged authorities to examine whether safe procedures, duty records, transportation and security arrangements were in place for late-night workers.
The HSYV said an independent CBI inquiry would ensure comprehensive examination of evidence, greater transparency, public confidence and accountability.
It also called for improved worker accommodation security, safe transportation for late-night workers, review of workplace safety responsibilities and regular communication with bereaved families.
