Shillong, Aug 28: A ceremony in connection with the President’s Police Gallantry Award will cost an estimated Rs 3 crore, with questions over this expenditure raised in the Assembly today.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds the Home portfolio, faced questions from opposition member Brightstarwell Marbaniang regarding the expense.
Tynsong said the selection of the Meghalaya Police for the award was a matter of pride for the state, noting that Meghalaya had not received the honour in more than five decades. Meghalaya would be only the fourth state to receive the award and added that the honour, instituted in 1952, has so far been conferred on personnel from 18 states.
However, Tynsong did not provide a breakup of the proposed Rs 3 crore expenditure, saying he did not have the details with him.
The award ceremony is expected to be held towards the end of September or by October 15, depending on the availability of the President, Prime Minister or Union Home Minister.
The state government will organise the event, with Tynsong urging legislators to attend what he described as a significant occasion for the Meghalaya Police.
