Shillong, Aug 24: Three persons accused of theft were rescued by police after they were caught and assaulted by a mob at 11 Mer, Mylliem around 5:40 am on Sunday, officials said today.
Police identified them as Banshan Kurbah (25), Albert Marbaniang (26) and Ibalabet Kharmawlong (27).
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the mob also attacked police personnel who intervened to rescue them.
Police have registered a suo-motu case at Mawngap Police Station over the mob assault.
Two main accused who led the attack — Arningson Kharkongor alias Arning (37) and Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor alias Lung Matok (33), both of Mylliem Kyndong, 11th Mile — have been arrested and are being produced in court.
Syiem said injured were taken to Pomlum PHC and later to Mawngap PS. Their vehicle (ML05-T-9837) was seized.
All three were later released as no complaint was received against them, he said.
Syiem urged people not to take law into their own hands and to call 112 instead.
