Shillong, Aug 19: Vehicular movement on a section of the Gandhipara–Puthimari road via Chenga–Benga has been halted after SPT Bridge No. 1/4 collapsed at Ch. 400.00 metres.
The Public Works Department (Roads), Ampati Division, said the bridge on the 0–1.00 km kutcha stretch gave way, making the road unsafe. Commuters have been advised to avoid the affected portion until further notice.
Motorists have been asked to take alternative routes via Garobadha–Mankachar Road through Balapara or Kathalbari–Gandhipara via Kasbanagar Road.
The Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), Ampati Division, has issued the closure order. The Assistant Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), Garobadha Sub-Division, will oversee temporary restoration work and submit reports for full reconstruction. Authorities have also been requested to regulate traffic in the area.
The department urged the public to cooperate and follow the advisory till the road is declared safe.
