Shillong, Aug 17: Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander Laloo Hek on Monday welcomed the ongoing relocation of hawkers from key stretches of Shillong, but urged the government to ensure suitable alternative spaces to protect vendors’ livelihoods.
Commenting on the relocation exercise, Hek said the move had improved the appearance and organisation of areas earlier occupied by makeshift structures.
Citing the stretch near JN Stadium, he said the area was earlier an “eyesore” but now looks “nice and organised” after the removal of temporary structures and establishment of a designated vending zone. He added that vendors in the new zone have access to basic amenities.
However, Hek stressed that relocation should not come at the cost of livelihoods. He called on the government to identify appropriate alternative locations for those being shifted.
On the relocation from Jail Road, he suggested authorities explore options in the area or its vicinity for the convenience of both residents and vendors.
Citing the hawkers’ market he built at Golf Link to accommodate vendors from the Golf Club area, Hek said a similar approach should be adopted elsewhere. He said a balanced approach was needed, with urban beautification pursued alongside measures to safeguard street vendors’ interests.
