Shillong, Aug 16: Different government and private organisations all came out to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday.
At district and sub-divisional headquarters, government ministers and MLAs led formal observances of Independence Day.
Lok Bhavan Shillong was thrown open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, with its ‘Colours of India’ programme drawing large crowds as it brought together citizens, artists, farmers, artisans and local entrepreneurs in a vibrant celebration of culture, enterprise and national unity.
A key attraction of Sunday’s programme was the exhibition area, where local farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs showcased their products. The stalls witnessed consistent footfall and strong sales throughout the day, providing direct economic opportunities for grassroots creators and entrepreneurs.
Driven by the partnership among PRIME Meghalaya (Promotion and Incubation of Market-driven Enterprises), the Meghalaya State Agriculture Marketing Board (MSAMB), MEGNOLIA (Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture), the Department of Arts and Culture and allied state agencies, the exhibition highlighted the State’s efforts to strengthen livelihoods while showcasing Meghalaya’s agricultural, artisanal and cultural heritage.
Attendees experienced Meghalaya’s diverse offerings through dedicated showcases featuring Meghalaya Collectives, the Mushroom Development Centre, Florish Meghalaya Orchid Garden and Chrysanthemum Farms. The exhibition also spotlighted the craftsmanship of groups such as Indigenous Innovations of Meghalaya and the Women’s Group & Handicrafts Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, creating a platform for both traditional crafts and emerging grassroots enterprises.
Programmes to celebrate Independence Day were also held at the Meghalaya High Court, North Eastern Council secretariat, IIM Shillong and the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya.
