Shillong, Aug 11: The Meghalaya Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today condemned the alleged police action against students protesting in Ranchi over education, employment, job scams and paper leaks, accusing the Congress-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government of using excessive force.
BJP state general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna alleged that police used barbed wire barricades, tear gas, water cannons and lathi-charge against students. The BJP also claimed that some female protesters complained that their clothes were torn during the police action.
The saffron party has jumped on the protests in Jharkhand after the BJP faced the ire of students, opposition parties and the general public over its handling of student demonstrations in Delhi recently.
The party said the students were protesting peacefully and demanded that the Congress-JMM government immediately address their concerns related to education and employment.
The BJP also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of adopting a “politics of convenience” by raising issues concerning student protests in Delhi while remaining silent on the Ranchi incident. It demanded that Gandhi and the Congress apologise to the youth.
