Shillong, Aug 11: The State Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Meghalaya, netted over 81 grams of heroin worth an estimated ₹12 lakh in two separate intelligence-based operations over the weekend, leading to the arrest of four persons.
In the first operation on August 8 in West Jaintia Hills, ANTF along with local police intercepted a Network Travels bus bearing registration ML-05-T-8381 in Phramer on NH-06. Two passengers travelling from Silchar to Shillong were found carrying heroin concealed in two plastic soap cases inside their jackets.
The accused were identified as Robert Nongrum (33) of Nongmensong and Batskhemlang Jarain (32) of Umktait Block-III. A total of 48.78 grams of heroin, valued at around ₹7 lakh, was seized.
In two more operations on August 10 at Umiam, ANTF intercepted a vehicle AS-01-AV-1166 and later a scooty ML-05-AB-9546 that tried to evade the checkpoint.
From the vehicle, Allan Marwein of Mawlai Nongkwar was found with 10.93 grams of heroin.
From the scooty, Jaziel Nongjop Syiem was caught with 21.71 grams concealed in soap cases inside his jacket.
The combined seizure from both Umiam cases was 32.64 grams, with an estimated market value of ₹5 lakh.
All accused have been arrested and cases registered under the NDPS Act, 1985. ANTF said investigations are on to trace the source, supply chain, financial trail and possible interstate linkages.
Calling it part of its sustained drive to dismantle drug networks, ANTF urged the public to share credible information. “Such efforts will be suitably rewarded in the collective fight to build a drug-free Meghalaya,” the force stated.
