      Numbers Can’t Win

Statistics are good at measuring campaigns. They are poor at capturing them. World No Tobacco Day in Meghalaya produced numbers that are hard to ignore: 9,312 schools took part. 55 colleges joined. More than 6 lakh students came out for rallies. 25 lakh signatures were collected on pledge sheets. Behind those figures sits another, colder one: tobacco claims an estimated 8,000 lives in the state every year.

The numbers tell us two things at once — the scale of the problem, and the scale of the response. But they do not tell us how the fight was actually waged. You will not find that in a spreadsheet. You will find it in a student who walked from house to house with a signature sheet, explaining to a loved one why they should quit. You will find it in 8,940 schools where morning assembly became an anti-tobacco pledge instead of routine. You will find it in teachers in remote blocks who stayed back after the last period to talk about addiction with a handful of students who asked questions they were afraid to ask at home.

That is where the campaign actually lived: between the numbers. This year’s theme was blunt: “Tobacco! Business of DEATH.” It was meant to be uncomfortable. Because the fight is not only against a leaf, a packet, or a habit. It is against an industry built on addiction, and against a culture that has normalised tobacco for nearly half the adult population in Meghalaya. Government data puts adult tobacco use at 47%. Changing that will take more than slogans.

The Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions, or ToFEI, initiative is built on that understanding. A tobacco-free school is not just a campus with a “No Smoking” board at the gate. It is a place where students learn that health is not negotiable. Where they learn that peer pressure can be questioned. Where they are expected to carry those lessons home. Officials call ToFEI one of the most effective tools to reduce prevalence, and the early reach suggests why. When you engage 15,458 college students and lakhs of school children, you are not just running an event. You are planting a norm. But effectiveness cannot be judged only by next year’s survey. The real test will come years later, when those students become parents who don’t smoke in front of their children, teachers who refuse tobacco on campus, and leaders who don’t accept it as “part of life here.” That is a longer timeline than any annual report.

Awards and recognition matter. They acknowledge the work of teachers, health workers, and students who made this happen. But the bigger prize is quieter: a generation that grows up without seeing tobacco as ordinary. A market where a teenager is not offered khaini at the shop. A home where no one has to plead with a loved one to quit.

The 25 lakh signatures matter because they got people talking. They turned a public health message into thousands of private conversations. That is how awareness moves from a banner to a belief.

We should not dismiss the data. Without numbers, there is no accountability, no funding, no way to know if we are moving. The 8,000 annual deaths remind us what is at stake. The 9,312 schools remind us what is possible.

But numbers alone do not win this fight. People do. The next chapter will not be written on paper. It will be written in daily choices — in homes, markets, playgrounds, and classrooms across Meghalaya. In whether we choose health over habit. On whether we are willing to have an uncomfortable conversation. That is a story no statistic can fully tell. And it is the one we now have to live.
