Shillong, Aug 10: The Education Cell of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Laban Circle has urged Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School and Laban Bengalee Girls’ Higher Secondary School to introduce Khasi as a subject from the 2027 academic session.
In a letter to the Principal on Monday, the KSU said the move aims to strengthen students’ connection with their linguistic and cultural roots.
“Language is an essential part of a community’s identity, history, and culture. For the Khasi community, the Khasi language carries generations of knowledge, traditions, values, and cultural heritage,” the letter stated.
The union said introducing Khasi would give students a platform to learn and appreciate the language, while also contributing to its preservation and development.
“Education has an important role in ensuring that indigenous languages continue to be valued and passed on to future generations,” KSU added, expressing hope that the school authority would consider the proposal in line with relevant academic guidelines.
