Shillong, Aug 3: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has welcomed NIT Meghalaya’s decision to roll back the compulsory 100 per cent attendance rule and the Undertaking/Declaration form that barred students from forming any students’ body.
Following complaints from students, the KSU Education Cell under Education Secretary Alerick Kharjana met NIT authorities and demanded immediate withdrawal of the undertaking within a week, and that attendance norms be aligned with Academic Regulations.
In its official response sent after five days, NIT Meghalaya confirmed that the required attendance is 75 per cent and not 100 per cent. The institute also said the practice of taking the Undertaking/Declaration form has been discontinued from the Academic Session 2026–27 and will not be taken from new students.
NIT further stated it will strengthen the student grievance redressal mechanism and introduce an online grievance portal for students.
Calling it a victory for students, the KSU thanked all students who raised the issue and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of students in the state.
