Nongpoh, Jul 29: The Ri-Bhoi district administration has ordered the immediate closure of the rear portion of Gorkha Nepali Secondary School at Borbhuin village after a major landslide on July 20 rendered it structurally unsafe.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini issued the order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, citing continued heavy rainfall and risk of further slope failure. The affected area has been declared out of bounds and entry strictly prohibited.
The school may continue functioning in other sections only if certified structurally safe and with all safety protocols in place. The head of institution has been directed to barricade the unsafe zone, put up warning signs, and inform parents.
The PWD (Roads) has been asked to clear debris and restore connectivity, in coordination with dorbar shnong, and to monitor the site.
Residents of Nongkylla Khasi and Borbhuin have been advised to stay alert and evacuate to safer places if needed.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner also prohibited public movement on a 30-meter stretch of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur PMGSY-III road from Km 34.380 to Km 34.410. Traffic has been diverted via 20 Mer until the road is cleared and declared safe.
