NPP refutes claims of ‘silence’ on FCRA Amendment Bill

Shillong, Jul 29: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Wednesday rejected media reports alleging it has maintained “silence” on the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, calling the claims “unverified” and “politically motivated.”

NPP National Working President James PK Sangma said the party has actively raised concerns at the highest levels of the union government to protect religious and minority institutions.

He cited engagements led by Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP National President Conrad K. Sangma this month and said he led a multi-denominational delegation including the Presbyterian Church of India, NEICC, Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong and Garo Baptist Convention to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The party said the delegation flagged concerns over Section 16A(5) and other provisions, urging safeguards for education, healthcare and welfare services. Shah assured extensive stakeholder consultations, it added.

The party also said the chief minister, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and CBCI representatives met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in April to highlight the role of charities in tribal areas and demand legislative safeguards.

The NPP accused rival parties of “weaponising critical issues for political posturing” and reiterated its commitment to “constructive, high-level engagement” over “empty rhetoric.”

The party said it remains committed to voicing concerns whenever the interests of citizens and social institutions are impacted.
