Shillong, Jul 8: The Meghalaya government is working towards establishing scientific landfills in all district headquarters to enhance waste management infrastructure across the state.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of urban affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar said significant progress has already been made, particularly in Nongpoh, with efforts underway in other towns as well.
Dhar said instructions have been given to chief executive officers of municipal boards and local MLAs in Williamnagar, Jowai, Tura, and Nongpoh to ramp up the work on waste management systems.
He said in Nongpoh, a budget of Rs 5.80 crore has been allocated, and the construction of the landfill is currently in progress.
On the proposed landfill at Nonghali for Shillong, Dhar said the project faces delays due to ongoing litigation. “We are ready to take a call on that. It is unfortunate that one of the village residents has moved court. Because of this the Nonghali project is slightly held up. Let us wait for the outcome,” he said.
Dhar assured that potential sites for landfills are being thoroughly assessed before final selection, ensuring minimal opposition from local communities. The site selection in Jowai is nearly finalised, with three to four potential locations under consideration. However, the exact site will only be shared after completing feasibility studies and receiving necessary approvals, he said.
The deputy chief minister said that all forthcoming landfills will comply with scientific standards and environmental regulations mandated by the pollution control act.
