Khliehriat, Jul 3: East Jaintia Hills police arrested three men after an investigation into a missing person complaint uncovered a murder.
The accused are identified as Kumar Barmam (44) of Kokrajhar district, Assam, Joysharon Barman (30) of Chirang district, Assam and Tensing Dkhar (34) alias Arki of Moolait Sumer.
On June 15, Kyrshan Lamurong (34) of Tongseng-Nongkhlieh went missing and a complaint was filed at Khliehriat police station on July 16. It is learnt that the victim, a father of six children, went missing with a newly bought Maruti Suzuki S-Presso.
Kumar and Joysharon were arrested from the Umpleng area and Dkhar from Lumshnong in the wee hours on Friday.
Superintendent of Police Shailendra Bamaniya said following investigation, involving both technical and human intelligence, the suspects were identified.
“During interrogation, the accused persons revealed that they abducted the victim before killing him and subsequently disposed of the body in an abandoned coal pit at Rymbai (Dongkon) village,” the SP said.
He said the police team located the dead body and retrieved it with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Search and Rescue Team of the Fire and Emergency Service.
The District Crime Scene Unit also examined the scene of crime and collected material evidence pertinent to the investigation. Post-mortem examination was conducted on the spot over the dead body, which was then handed over to the family.
The SP said the vehicle was recovered near Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills district and police have sent a team to retrieve it.
