Shillong, Jul 3: Concerned over the deteriorating condition of the road connecting Songsak, Nangapa, and Mendipathar, the Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS) has urged the East Garo Hills district administration to prohibit movement of heavy loaded vehicles along this road.
According to the organization, residents have continuously raised alarms about the hardships caused by overloaded trucks, including coal trucks, stone dumpers, and log trucks. The road is plagued by excessive potholes and dust, making travel extremely difficult and unsafe. Community members, especially vulnerable groups such as children, students, and the elderly, face significant challenges accessing essential services, they said.
Pointing out that the ghastly condition of the road adversely affects citizens’ fundamental rights, particularly in accessing education and healthcare, the GHYS said that prohibition of heavy vehicles is necessary for public safety and welfare.
The organisation said that if heavy vehicles continue to operate on this road, it will be left with no alternative but to seek appropriate legal remedies against the district authorities.
