Shillong, Jun 24: The West Jaintia Hills district administration has issued an alert for residents along the Kopili River and downstream areas after the Khandong Dam in Assam’s Umrangso began releasing water due to rising reservoir levels.
According to officials about 43 cubic meters per second (cumec) of water was released from the dam into the Kopili River on June 17. However, continuous rainfall in the catchment area prompted an increase in discharge to around 157 cumec the next day.
The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has urged residents living along the riverbanks and in downstream areas to remain vigilant and avoid going near the river. People have also been advised to keep livestock away from low-lying areas as a precautionary measure.
