Shillong, Jun 20: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has underscored the pressing necessity for technological agility within India’s defence sector.
In an era marked by hybrid threats and cyber challenges, Singh said that traditional modes of preparedness are no longer sufficient. He underscored that the defence forces must adapt to the constantly evolving nature of warfare.
Interacting with soldiers at the Eastern Air Command headquarters in Shillong on Saturday, Singh identified various factors that are becoming crucial for national security, including information warfare, logistics resilience, and supply chain security.
The minister highlighted India’s journey towards self-reliance, or Aatmanirbharta, stressing that it is vital in ensuring that national security is upheld on India’s own terms.
Singh praised the Eastern Air Command as an integral component of India’s security along its eastern frontier. He commended the brave soldiers for their unwavering commitment, especially under challenging conditions.
He stated that the North east region is not merely governed by geographical boundaries but is instead a strategic pillar crucial for India’s security and prosperity. He noted that as India enhances its role on the global stage, the importance of the Northeast, as a key component of India’s Act East Policy, has significantly increased.
Singh recognised the growing role of women in the defence forces as a reflection of India’s cultural values, showcasing a balance between modernity and tradition. “The growing role of women in the defence forces represents more than just institutional advancement. It is a testament to the cultural values for which India is known around the world. It demonstrates that even as we embrace modernity, our culture remains firmly grounded in its core principles,” he added.
Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia and other senior officers of the Indian Air Force were present on the occasion.
On Sunday, Singh will participate in the IAF’s observance of International Yoga Day.
