Shillong, Jun 18: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has discovered that despite significant investment, the Khasi Traditional Medicine Institute project at Lumsohpetbneng has not been made operational.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore, the Khasi Traditional Medicine Institute was established with high hopes for promoting traditional medicinal practices.
Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh during the budget session on Thursday said the institute was leased to the Centre Learning of Knowledge and Services in 2014, operated by B.G. Byrsat, with an annual rent of Rs 9 lakh for a duration of 20 years. However, he said the institute has not functioned effectively since its inception.
Lyngdoh said that the district council has not received any rent payments to date. He said the lessee has been summoned to discuss the matter and the possibility of returning the institute’s operations back to the district council if there is no intention to make it functional.
He said the KHADC also plans to issue a show-cause notice to Byrsat as per law.
