Nongpoh, Jun 6: The arm wrestlers from Ri Bhoi district have brought laurels to the state at the 4th PAFI National Arm-Wrestling Championship 2026, held in Gujarat from May 29 to June 2.
Competing against top athletes from across the nation, the team from Ri Bhoi showcased exemplary skill and determination, securing an impressive medal haul. In total, Meghalaya’s representatives won 81 medals (32 gold, 32 silver, and 17 bronze medals) at this prestigious event, with Ri Bhoi district contributing significantly to this achievement.
Among the notable performers was Margaret Pathaw, who not only won two gold medals in the masters 60 kg category but also served as a role model for aspiring arm wrestlers in the region. She is also the Ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme under the Social Welfare Department in the district.
Upon their return, the champions were welcomed and felicitated by the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) at Mawdiangum on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters Margaret expressed her commitment to nurturing new talent and promoting the sport among younger athletes. However, she also highlighted the need for better training facilities and equipment in Ri Bhoi to ensure that these athletes can continue to train effectively.
She said arm wrestling is steadily gaining popularity in Meghalaya and that the state’s athletes are now preparing to represent India at the upcoming World Arm Wrestling Championship scheduled to be held in New Delhi.
