Shillong, Jun 2: The Hynñiewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) today urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to formally recognise and include the Khasi-Pnar villages of the dispute Block 1 area as part of Meghalaya, warning that residents are being denied “opportunities in all respects and necessities.”
In a memorandum to the CM, the HBDRF pointed out that the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) had already officially notified Elaka Labang Nangphyllut on November 8, 2023 and appointed Prolin Samayang as Acting Dolloi and issued him the Sanad. Separate Sanads have also been issued for the Waheh Chnong and the villages have been formally notified, the forum said.
Block 1 and 2 were historically part of the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills district of undivided Assam until the government of the latter split them off in 1951. When Meghalaya was carved out of Assam two decades later, Block 1 and 2 stayed with Assam, though Meghalaya retained its claim.
“It is of utmost importance that the Meghalaya government recognises and incorporates these villages into the state of Meghalaya, ensuring that the residents of these areas receive their opportunities in all respects and necessities,” the HBDRF stated.
Little will happen practically if Meghalaya goes through with this as Assam retains physical control of the disputed areas. However, it could be a morale boost and sign of Meghalaya’s intent, though Assam may see it as a provocation.
