Shillong, Jun 2: The office of the Meghalaya Commissioner of Food Safety recently shut down three eateries in Mawkdok on the road to Sohra for failing to adhere to safety standards.
These eateries were ordered to shut down for keeping edible items past their expiry dates and also for failing to comply with hygiene standards set by authorities.
“This is a highly frequented place, especially by tourists, and they were found to be unhygienic,” D Bahun Shisha Mukhim, Food Safety Commissioner (Enforcement), told reporters.
During a performance audit, Mukhim and her team found that the eateries were so unhygienic that it could have compromised the safety of consumers.
“We found out that some food items were well past their expiry dates and, therefore, for the safety of the tourists and others who frequent these eateries, I asked them to close until they are able to clean up the place and follow protocols,” she stated.
Mukhim urged all eateries to procure FSSAI licences and also to undergo food safety training and certification so that these establishments can get the food safety supervisors certificate.
“Each establishment should have at least one food safety supervisor so that they can look after the hygiene aspect,” she added.
