Khliehriat, May 29:   Parents of one Joslymon Lyngdoh, who was arrested in connection with a bike theft case has claimed that their son was subjected to custodial torture while detained at the Umkiang patrolling post.

On May 21, Joslymon was apprehended under accusations of stealing a motorcycle in Assam, leading to a case being registered at the Rongpur police outpost in Silchar, Assam.

According to the father Dominic Myrching, after his arrest, Joslymon suffered physical assaults at the patrolling post, resulting in severe health issues that required hospitalisation at Woodland Hospital in Jowai.

After being released on bail on May 26, the family decided to pursue legal action. They have lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police in East Jaiñtia Hills District and will also approach the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission in Shillong.

Myrchiang expressed hope that the investigation will uphold their son’s rights and ensure accountability for the alleged mistreatment.

The Khasi Students Union, Narpuh Circle, has condemned the torture allegations, emphasising that while the bike theft case merits a thorough investigation, the accused should never face violence during custody.
