Shillong, May 26: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), through its sports cell, has submitted formal complaints to Meghalaya’s Director General of Police and the BCCI to seek immediate intervention into serious allegations of sexual harassment involving Meghalaya women cricketers and the reported role of certain Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) office bearers.
The pressure group stated that, while the matter has reportedly already come under the cognisance of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), the seriousness of the allegations demands urgent, fair and independent action from both law enforcement agencies and cricket authorities.
In its complaint to the DGP, the HYC sought immediate investigation, registration of FIRs where applicable, protection of complainants and witnesses and legal action against all individuals found responsible.
In its representation to the BCCI, the group urged the governing body for cricket to initiate an independent inquiry, examine the accountability of concerned MCA officials, ensure protection for affected players and strengthen grievance redressal mechanisms within the cricketing system.
Last week several female cricketers filed a complaint with the MSCW against the coach and manager of the U–23 women‘s T20 team that took part in a BCCI tournament last year. Since then, the MCA president, James PK Sangma, publicly accused the MCA honorary secretary, Rayonald Kharkamni, of trying to cover up the harassment and to try to dismiss the Ombudsman who was asked to investigate the allegations.
