Shillong, May 21: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced the establishment of a new college dedicated to agriculture, horticulture, and food processing at Williamnagar.
He said the government aims to commence its academic sessions by 2027. Alongside the agricultural college, a veterinary college is also planned for Kyrdemkulai in Ri-Bhoi district.
Speaking at a function in Tura on Thursday he said these institutions will not only enhance educational access but also provide direct benefits to thousands of farmers and livestock rearers in the region.
With a focus on research, innovation, and disease control, these colleges are expected to become pivotal centers for technological advancement in agriculture and livestock sectors, he added.
The Chief Minister highlighted the ongoing initiatives by the labour department that seek to improve the welfare of workers through financial assistance and education support funded by labor cess from construction projects.
Furthermore, he pointed to the booming food processing sector in Meghalaya, where local farmers are benefiting economically. With over one lakh ice creams produced daily through local units, the integration of agriculture into economic initiatives underscores the government’s vision for sustainable development, he said.
