Shillong, Apr 26: Construction of the Rs 265 crore Phlangwanbroi-Ranikor road has begun, with earth cutting underway from both ends of the 47km stretch, Mawsynram UDP legislator Olan Sing Suin said recently.
The project, which connects Phlangwanbroi to Ranikor 18 and links to the state highway, is being developed as an intermediate road with a width of 5.5 metres.
“Work on this road is progressing well. Machines are deployed on different stretches and have begun earth cutting, moving down from Phlangwanbroi and up from Ranikor 18,” Suin said.
He expressed hope that the road would bring significant changes to the area once completed.
The Rs 265 crore allocation under the current tender does not include the Umpung bridge. “For the Umpung bridge, we are still appointing a consultant to specially design and build it, and for this we will seek funds from the World Bank,” the MLA said.
On land acquisition, Suin clarified that no compensation will be paid. “For this road we cannot give land compensation to the landowners because I see that this road is adequate as we have it,” he said.
According to him, residents have agreed to provide land free of cost to the PWD, and there has been no difficulty in securing the required width. “As per the record available, we have also received all the land compensation,” he added.
