Shillong, Apr 24: The presence of military units in and around Shillong would put the Meghalaya capital at grave risk of attack by enemy countries if war were to break out, the outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) opined today.
Referring to the mock air raid drill carried out today evening, wherein the entire city was meant to switch of electric lights to simulate what should happen in case of enemy air attack, the HNLC’s general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said that major military installations, such as the headquarters of the Indian Air Force’s Eastern Air Command, Shillong Cantonment, 101 Area, Umroi Military Station, etc are all located in populated areas, “raising serious concerns about potential civilian vulnerability in any future conflict scenario.”
It warned against any further permission being given for the establishment or expansion of army camps, air force stations or any strategic military base in Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
