Shillong, Apr 24: Meghalaya undertook a significant step in enhancing its civil defense strategy by conducting a statewide mock drill today.
The exercise, dubbed “Armex-1 2026”, aimed to rigorously test the state’s preparedness for various emergency scenarios, ensuring that all agencies involved are well-equipped and ready to respond effectively.
Conducted by the Directorate of Civil Defence & Home Guards, the mock drill involved the Air Force, Army, Police, SDRF, Home Guards, Civil Defence Wardens & Volunteers, Fire & Emergency Services, Health Department, Power Department, SDMA, DDMA, DIPR, Dorbar Shnong, NCC, NSS, NYKS, and other stakeholders.“
The exercise was conducted in two stages. The first stage was conducted from 3 pm to 4 pm. The second stage is the blackout simulation to test public readiness.
In Shillong the exercise was conducted at St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School, St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School and Poinisuk Hotel. Scenarios was recreated for a fire situation search and rescue, first aid and medical assistance
The exercise created a realistic environment for various departments to synchronise their efforts under pressure.
Residents witnessed a rapid deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, and civil defence volunteers who worked in tandem to manage the simulated crisis.
Officials noted that the primary objective of the exercise was to evaluate the agility and effectiveness of the district’s specialised units.
By simulating a blackout alongside the air raid, authorities were able to assess communication protocols and the speed of medical intervention in restricted conditions.
After the exercise, a debriefing session was held to review the performance, identify gaps and suggest measures for improving future response strategies.
