Shillong, Apr 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today reviewed plans to diversify the Public Distribution System (PDS) and roll out a nutrition kit scheme, aimed at improving the health of pregnant women and newborns.
The proposed initiatives align closely with the state’s “Mission 1,000 Days” program, which emphasises the importance of proper nutrition and healthcare for mothers and children from conception until the child’s second birthday.
The meeting was attended by officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department. Sangma expressed a clear goal: to introduce a wider variety of nutritious and locally sourced food items through the PDS. This strategy not only seeks to provide families with access to food but also aims to ensure they enjoy healthier and more balanced diets.
“The proposed Meghalaya Nutrition Kit Scheme is aimed at supplementing the nutritional needs of expecting mothers and supporting healthier babies right from conception,” he said.
The initiative, he added, reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening food security while prioritising maternal and child nutrition across the state.
