Shillong, Apr 1: In a significant breakthrough, the East Khasi Hills police arrested a man in connection with the tragic murder of a seven-year-old boy from Nongrah.
This arrest follows a six-month-long investigation carried out by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the accused, 32-year-old Kennedy Khongsit, played a key role in the death of the child.
He stated that the investigations were initially hindered by a lack of clear motive and evidence. As the investigation progressed, it was unveiled that the child, identified as Kyrshanbor Kharmudai, met a horrifying fate due to a minor disagreement.
Syiem said findings revealed that Khongsit allegedly suffocated the boy out of anger when he declined to assist with washing a shirt. After committing the crime, the accused allegedly kept the body near his residence before disposing of it at a roadside location in Mawpat, where it was discovered on October 9, 2025.
He also pointed out Khongsit’s violent history, noting that previous incidents involving him had often gone unreported, indicating a pattern of abusive behaviour. His wife left him reportedly due to his aggressive temperament.
