Shillong, Mar 5: The KVK South Garo Hills conducted a one day seminar on ‘Climate Change: Its Impact on Rural Areas, Agriculture and Food Supply’ today.
The event was funded by NABARD’s Climate Change Fund. Special guest, Khelchandra Chongtham of NABARD South Garo Hills, highlighted the growing impact of climate change caused by human interventions, with particular focus on the situation in Meghalaya. He stressed the need for sustainable practices to reduce environmental degradation.
Athokpam Haribhushan, Principal Scientist & Head of KVK, emphasised the important role of agroforestry in mitigating climate change. He explained that integrating trees with agricultural systems can enhance biodiversity, improve soil health and contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.
The seminar featured four technical sessions covering various aspects of climate change and climate-smart agricultural practices.
Sessions on ‘The Impact of Climate Change on Agricultural Insect-Pests and Diseases’ by Tanya R Marak, ‘The Impact of Climate Change on Livestock Health’ by Rupam Bhattacharjya, ‘Climate-Smart Practices for Sustainable Agriculture’ by Rike Chelchak A Sangma and ‘Climate-Smart Practices for Improving Soil Health’ by Athokpam Haribhushan were conducted.
A total of 50 farmers from nearby villages participated in the seminar. A folder on climate change was released during the event. The session concluded with detailed discussions and suggestions from the KVK staff and farmers participants.
