Shillong, Mar 3: Former Chief Postmaster General and senior officer of the Indian Postal Service, Lalthanglura Zadeng, passed away today, in Shillong at the age of 91.
Born in the village of Thelep in Mizoram to village chief Thlanga Zadeng and Chemsini Pachuau, Zadeng was raised in a family of nine siblings. He was the sixth among five sisters and two brothers, and is survived by his youngest sister, Pi Zorami of Electric Veng, Aizawl. Throughout his life, he remained deeply committed to the advancement of education within his extended family supporting many of them.
He began his education in Serkawn English Middle School in 1947 and completed Class VI in 1951. He later moved to Shillong, where he completed his matriculation examination in 1956. He pursued his Intermediate of Arts from St. Edmund’s College in 1958 and was awarded a merit scholarship by the Government of Assam in recognition of his academic excellence among tribal students. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Scottish Church College, Calcutta, in 1960.
In 1963, he successfully qualified for the Indian Police Service, becoming the second Mizo to do so at the time, and underwent training in Mussoorie and Mount Abu during 1963–1964. But after considering options he instead chose ti be the Indian Postal Service. Over the course of his distinguished career, he served in Silchar, Gauhati, Kohima, Calcutta, and Shillong, retiring in February 1997 as Chief Postmaster General. He was widely respected for his sincerity, integrity, and steadfast dedication to duty.
He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters and their families.
His funeral service will be held on March 4, 2026 at his residence, Zadeng Complex, House No. 16, Pohkseh North III, Shillong at 11 am.
