Nongpoh, Feb 19: A truck rammed a school bus near 17th Mile, Ri Bhoi district, leaving one student dead and several other students injured.
The fatal accident occurred at around 8 am when a clinker-laden truck (NL-01-AA-4672) on its way to Guwahati went out of control and crashed into the rear of the school bus with force.
The bus belonging to Mount Zion Academy was stationed by the roadside to pick up students. At the time of the accident, around 20 students were inside the bus.
Seven students sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to Guwahati for advanced medical treatment, while those with minor injuries were taken to Byrnihat PHC for care.
One of the seriously injured students, Maxwell Lyngdoh of 19th Mile area in Ri-Bhoi, later died during treatment at Arhi Hospital, Jorabat.
The truck driver, who initially fled the scene, was later apprehended by the police. Investigation into the matter is currently underway.
