Shillong, Feb 19: Independent MDC Ricky Shullai staged a walk out from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council session after his resolution to declare November 1 as a state holiday to commemorate the death anniversary of JJM Nichols Roy failed to receive support.
Shullai moved the resolution, citing Nichols Roy’s contribution as a member of the Constituent Assembly and architect of the Sixth Schedule, which safeguards tribal autonomy and rights. He urged the KHADC and Meghalaya government to honour Nichols Roy’s legacy with a state holiday.
Nichols Roy is credited with enabling the establishment of Autonomous District Councils, protecting land, customs, and traditions of indigenous communities. The resolution sought to recognize his contribution to Meghalaya’s constitutional history and tribal rights.
