Shillong, Feb 14: A special talk on “Access to Justice and Fundamental Rights” by Judge of the Gauhati High Court Justice Robin Phukan was held at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).
The programme brought together students, faculty members, and legal scholars to deliberate on the critical role of access to justice in a democratic framework.
Justice Phukan elaborated on access to justice as a cornerstone of democracy. He explained how fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India guarantee equality, liberty, and dignity to every citizen.
He further discussed the proactive role of the judiciary in protecting these rights and ensuring that justice remains accessible, particularly to marginalised and vulnerable sections of society. His address provided valuable insights into constitutional interpretation, judicial accountability, and the evolving dimensions of legal remedies in contemporary India.
USTM Vice Chancellor Prof. G. D. Sharma said the programme served as a significant academic engagement, reinforcing the university’s commitment to promoting legal awareness, constitutional values, and meaningful dialogue on issues central to the Indian legal system.
