Shillong, Jan 28: A two minutes’ silence will be observed on January 30 at 11am on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day.
The annual event commemorates the sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for India’s freedom. The date was chosen as the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was murdered by Nathuram Godse in 1948.
At 10:59am a siren will be sounded for one minute to warn all concerned about the commencement of the two-minute silence at 11am. On hearing the siren, all persons are requested to stand and observe silence, where work and movement must be stopped throughout the state.
During this period, All India Radio should stop broadcasting and traffic will come to a complete standstill for two minutes.
At 11:02am, the siren will be sounded again to indicate the end of the silence.
In Shillong, the official programme will be held in front of the Secretariat’s Rilang Building.
