Shillong, Jan 17: Noted evangelist of the state, Rev Dr Rieweh Robert Cunville, breathed his last on Friday at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, on Saturday morning at around 7:30 am.
Rev Dr Cunville (86), was the son of late Dr R.L. Cunville and late Felicia Kharshiing, and was born on March 15, 1939, in Tezpur, Assam.
He was known for his association with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), leadership in the United Bible Societies (UBS), and impactful preaching.
Rev Dr Cunville initially aimed for law studies in England but felt a strong calling to ministry after hearing a preacher.
He studied at Serampore College and married Carol from Shillong in 1965. Rev Dr Cunville served as a lecturer at Cherra Theological College and Youth Secretary for the National Council of Churches and pastored Union Chapel, Calcutta.
He was elected President of the United Bible Societies (UBS) in 2010 and 2016, becoming President Emeritus in 2023.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma condoled the death of Rev Dr Cunville.
“Saddened to learn of the passing of noted evangelist from our state, Rev. Dr. Robert R. Cunville. A true shepherd of Christ, Rev. Cunville drew people closer to Him through a life marked by humility and a spirituality deeply rooted in faith. A kind and compassionate human being, his sermons reflected not only profound spiritual insight but also the quiet strength he lived by each day. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, the members of the church, and all who were dear to him. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Sangma stated.
