Shillong, Jan 17: Tura Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Saleng A Sangma has said that the move of the state government to pay the salaries of the employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is nothing to be happy about since this shows that the Executive Committee cannot run the district council.
The Tura MP said that he could see some malafide intention in the state government’s plan to pay the salaries of the autonomous district council employees.
He asked whether someone is trying to cover up some scam that the government is so eager to pay the salaries of the employees of the GHADC.
The MP said that the NPP has been running the GHADC since 2013 till date.
Sangma said that the centre had given funds for various developmental projects and also a one-time-grant to the district council asking what has happened to this support.
“District councils are autonomous institutions and they have to run everything on their own, create funds on their own, get funds by themselves. But when government announced that they will pay the salaries, then it means the Executive Committee have already failed to govern the council,” Sangma added.
Stating that the payment of salaries by the government shows that the NPP has failed the people of Garo Hills.
Pointing out that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), had bluntly rejected the offer of the state government, the Tura MP said that the GHADC could have also done so.
“The Executive Committee of Garo Hills was very weak and their administration has failed,” he stated.
Sangma asked from where are the funds being given to pay the salaries of the GHADC employees.
