Shillong, Jan 12:Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui today said he is yet to receive a complete picture as to why the Meghalaya Transport Corporation’s (MTC) suddenly decided to stop its school bus services from April 1.
Responding to concerns raised by parents, the minister said he cannot comment on the issue until the reasons behind the decision are clarified. Parents have expressed worry over the cost and reliability of alternative transport options, including private vehicles and Sustainable Transport and Efficient Mobility Society (STEMS) buses.
Rymbui said the government remains committed to public welfare and assured that if the STEMS bus service continues to benefit students, its reach will be expanded in the future.
In a short press release on January 8, the state-owned MTC announced that it will discontinue its school bus operation from the next academic year, effective April 1. The decision was taken by the corporation’s Board of Directors. The MTC has suggested that the general public consider enrolling with the government-initiated STEMS as an alternative.
