The recent decision of the state cabinet to make Khasi and Garo languages compulsory for all students from preschool to Class 1 will strengthen the fraternal bonds between the two major tribes of the Meghalaya, two cabinet ministers from opposite ends of the state have opined.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, the Amlarem MLA, today said that he was glad that the cabinet has made learning Khasi and Garo languages compulsory in their formative years. Rymbui said that as a state it is important to learn the basics of Khasi and Garo languages.
He added that the Education Department has developed a module wherein teachers from all over the state will get basic training to teach their students.
Meanwhile, fellow minister Timothy D Shira, the Resubelpara MLA, also praised the move.
He said that this will be a factor to bring in a feeling of brotherhood and strengthen the bond between the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo communities.
“Once we can communicate with each other this will strengthen the relationship,” Shira said.
