Shillong, Dec 29: The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) celebrated its 44th anniversary at a function that also saw it honour black belt karatekas, medallists, coaches and officials who have brought glory to the association and the state as a whole over the past year.
The event took place on 23 December at the Khasi National Dorbar Hall in Mawkhar here in the presence of karatekas, coaches, officials and members of AMKA.
Certificates were awarded to 22 karatekas who had successfully completed their 1st Dan and 2nd Dan black belt grades, marking an important milestone in their karate journey and recognising their dedication and commitment.
The programme also included the felicitation of national and regional medal winners, acknowledging their outstanding performances and achievements in various championships. Coaches and officials were also felicitated in appreciation of their valuable contribution, dedication and service towards the growth and development of karate in Meghalaya.
AMKA President Hunlang Lytan highlighted the importance of the association’s 44-year journey and its continuous contribution to the promotion and development of karate in Meghalaya. He emphasised the values of discipline, dedication and unity that AMKA has upheld over the years.
A brief report on the history, growth and legacy of the association was presented by AMKA General Secretary Ksan Kupar Warjri. While highlighting the milestones achieved by AMKA over the past four decades, he recalled the vision and farsightedness of the association’s founder, the late Sensei Stephan Leong, who initiated and introduced karate in Meghalaya. Warjri stated that the progress and achievements of the association today are the result of the founder’s guidance, teaching, strict discipline and emphasis on mutual respect among karatekas.
The General Secretary further urged the present generation of karatekas to remember and follow the teachings and values laid down by Leong, stating that these principles would continue to guide them towards success. He recalled that under the founder’s leadership and mentorship, several renowned international karatekas were produced who brought laurels and medals to the state and the country, notably Banshanlang Kharumnuid, Donboklang Lyngdoh, Damang Syngkon, Linza Syiem, and others.
Adding colour and vibrancy to the celebration, the karatekas also showcased their talents through performances, including singing and dancing, which were well received and appreciated by the audience.
