Shillong, Dec 23: The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has warned Ardent Basaiawmoit, president of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) and Nongkrem MLA, to stop acting like a “Blei Khyndew” (God of the earth) amid tensions over the outfit’s interference in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) affairs.
In a statement, HNLC general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw criticised Basaiawmoit’s remarks condemning the group’s interference, saying the outfit has every right to protect indigenous community rights.
The militant group recently weighed in on the KHADC’s decision to appoint an Acting Chief of Sohra following the death of the Syiem instead of confirming Marremdor Syiem as the new Syiem of Sohra. The HNLC came out against the KHADC move, decrying its interference in traditional Khasi governance structures.
Nongtraw accused the Acting Chief, Mynjurlang Majaw, a VPP worker, of influencing KHADC decisions, particularly the sanad issue for Hima Sohra.
