Nongpoh, Dec 22:  Ri Bhoi district police today conducted an intensive vehicle checking drive along the National Highway 6 and detected vehicles fitted with black tinted films, sirens and official-looking nameplates.

The checking drive was spearheaded by Senior Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore along with Additional Superintendent of Police Orville Massar, assisted by police personnel from the Nongpoh and Umsning Traffic Branches.

Two bank cash-carrying vehicles were found illegally using sirens without permission. The police seized the sirens and imposed fines. Vehicles fitted with tinted window glasses were dealt with strictly, with the police removing the tints immediately without any leniency.

Police also detained two private vehicles that were wrongly using the inscriptions “Government of Meghalaya” and “Government of India, Ministry of Power” near their registration numbers. No government officers were present in these vehicles.

Meghalaya has adopted standard operating procedures (SOPs) regulating the use of beacons, flashing lights, sirens, tinted windows and nameplates on official vehicles.
