Shillong, Dec 20: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) held another round of meeting with the representatives of the cement companies to discuss the recent arrangement to allow 40 trucks per day to transport clinker and cement.
MCTODA Spokesperson Wanshwa Nongtdu told reporters that so far its members have been able to transport only 18 trucks daily out of 40 trucks.
Chairman Mosklandar Marngar said discussions over freight have been taken up many times with the government before they went on strike. It was only recently that the government referred the truckers to discuss with the cement companies, he said.
He cautioned that if the discussions fail to yield outcomes it could lead to another round of protests. Issues have been pending for years making it difficult to immediately resolve them, Marngar said, adding that the association will continue to fight for the benefit of the people.
Meanwhile, MCTODA Joint Secretary Kmen Myrchiang urged truck drivers to be respectful and to refrain from drinking alcohol to avoid being accused and harassed.
