Shillong, Dec 15: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will order a comprehensive review into all alleged irregularities in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) if it comes to power after council elections due early next year.
This was stated today by former minister and one of only two MLAs the BJP has in Meghalaya, Alexander Laloo Hek.
Hek’s remarks came in the wake of recent search operations carried out by the Enforcement Directorate at five locations in Tura in connection with suspected corruption linked to the GHADC.
The investigation pertains to allegations that development projects in the Asanang constituency were not executed as approved and that funds meant for these works were misused. Officials have claimed that out of a total allocation of Rs 28.66 crore, council members, along with certain contractors, allegedly diverted the money in violation of prescribed norms.
The BJP leader also said the party has begun preparations for the upcoming elections and plans to contest all 29 seats in the GHADC. Expressing optimism, Hek said the party expects to improve its performance compared to previous elections, even as it continues to expand its base in Meghalaya.
The GHADC is currently run by the National People’s Party (NPP), which is an ally of the BJP.
