Shillong, Dec 11: Regulated electrical shutdowns are currently being faced by consumers in Shillong and Tura as part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a critical initiative aimed at strengthening the power infrastructure in the state.

The RDSS scheme involves the installation of approximately 2,600 new transformers, replacement of 3,800km of old wires, and the laying of 4,300km of new lines.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the project valued at Rs 900 crore is being implemented to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply for the people of Meghalaya.

In a video message, he said that the cuts are not part of any load shedding but necessary so that the RDSS work can be implemented. Efforts are being made to minimise the inconvenience caused by the shutdowns and the government is working closely with Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) and the Power Department to improve communication and ensure timely updates are provided to the public.

“It is a necessary step towards achieving our goal of providing better power infrastructure for the people of Meghalaya,” he said.

The CM assured consumers that the benefits of the project will be seen in the improved power supply in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh said that Meghalaya will enjoy uninterrupted power supply this Christmas. According to him, the state’s power situation is currently stable and there is nothing for consumers to worry about.

Regarding the daily power cuts that the CM referred to separately, Lyngdoh stated that they are for maintenance of redistribution projects. However, he has directed officials to inform local leaders and consumers at least two days in advance.

Speaking about larger issues like pending bills, financial pressure and interest burdens faced by the Power Department and MeECL, Lyngdoh said that both are moving in the right direction.

The department is now focusing on improving its systems and boosting overall efficiency.
