Shillong, Dec 9: A Khadi market complex funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) has been completed.
The modern commercial complex at Barik Point was constructed at Rs 22.73 crore and completed on November 11, the NEC informed.
Developed by the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation under the aegis of the NEC and the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region, the project aims to transform the existing Gram Shilpa outlet into a vibrant and efficient marketplace for Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) products.
The NEC said the project generates significant direct and indirect employment—from construction-phase workers to sales, management, and maintenance personnel during operation.
“By providing a dedicated and modern platform for showcasing KVI products, the plaza will expand market access for local artisans. This is expected to boost sales and enhance income for those engaged in handicrafts, textiles, leather goods, cosmetics, and food products.
Meanwhile, the council released a total of 8,46,81,382 during the month of November, 2025 for five projects in Meghalaya for various development programmes supporting sports and youth infrastructure, bridge connectivity, institutional facilities for skill and technical education, and livelihood-oriented craft clusters, thereby enhancing both connectivity and income opportunities.
Additionally, the NEC also released a total amount of Rs 56,22,37,739 for funding projects across all the eight North Eastern Slates as well as for supporting various cultural festivals, seminars, researches, etc in the region.
In addition to state-specific releases, NEC also released a total amount of 14,89,90,034 to various central agencies and cultural bodies in November for supporting various cultural events, seminars on livelihood, science and technology, academic workshops, etc.
The NEC said its major project interventions during the month included community development initiatives for indigenous groups, establishment of animal feed production and scientific pig breeding units, creation of piggery value chain infrastructure, documentation of traditional medicinal knowledge, expansion of tele-education through Smart Virtual Classrooms and strengthening of STINER technology and innovation hubs across the North East. Project support was also extended for development of sports infrastructure in Manipur.
These initiatives were implemented through key central agencies mostly located in the region, it said.
