Shillong, Nov 26: The Defence Spokesperson and Public Relations Officer has issued a rebuttal regarding a news report on the lack of progress on the proposed flyover (or overpass) from Rilbong Point to Barik.
A report in a local newspaper last week said that the project has been stalled as the flyover would have to be constructed over defence land. Although the report does not accuse the defence authorities of holding up the project, the defence spokesperson clarified that no formal application for necessary land requirement has yet been received and this is the starting point for any land acquisition process.
The report stated that the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL) is running out of patience and wants the state government to hand over the defence land or risk cancelling the project.
The overpass is part of work under the Shillong-Dawki Road project that is meant to construct a flyover along the Rilbong Point to Anjalee stretch. The state government wants the project to take the overpass up to Barik in order to ease the daily traffic woes that this area faces.
Until the state government formally facilitates transfer or clearance of land up to Barik Point, the NHIDCL has refused to take the project beyond Rilbong, the newspaper said. If no handover is made soon, the project will terminate at Rilbong.
