Shillong, Nov 25: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance into the reported delays and indifference meted out to two injured students of NEHU after a serious road accident on November 17.
The MHRC has issued a notice today to the Director of Health Service (MI) to conduct an enquiry and to submit a detailed report on or before January 7, 2026.
Stephanie Shadap (22) and Daritngen Ponduhkhei (20) were walking near NEHU Gate-II when they were hit by a speeding vehicle. Both suffered severe head and facial injuries.
Families and students of the university accused the Shillong Civil Hospital of neglect and indifference when the two injured students were taken there at around 8: 15 pm.
The commission quoted reports that the injured students were left unattended and one of them was bleeding for nearly an hour.
The injured student was later shifted to Nazareth Hospital that same night after former Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh arrived.
